What We Do
THEMATIC AREAS
HEALTH
We implement programs focused on disease prevention and improving adolescent health, with a particular emphasis on preventing teenage pregnancy. Our initiatives include comprehensive sexuality education and reproductive health, awareness campaigns to teach teens about safe practices, and a strengthened focus on referral pathways for gender-based violence (GBV). We provide essential health services tailored to adolescents, including counseling, referrals, and psychosocial support. Additionally, we train peer educators to enhance prevention and intervention efforts within the community, ensuring a holistic approach to adolescent health and well-being.
EDUCATION
Our priority is to increase access We believe that education is the foundation for personal and societal growth. We have put in place interventions to keep both boys and girls in school and encourage them to complete their education through mentorship programs, life and vocational skills, career guidance, reading clubs, and debating clubs. Additionally, we are dedicated to building the capacity of teachers so they can offer quality education. We also provide resources and materials to support teachers and educators in delivering meaningful lessons to learners, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive academically and personally.
CROSS CUTTING ISSUES
CLIMATE ACTION
- Forest Restoration and Conservation: Implementing afforestation projects to restore and expand forest cover, thereby enhancing biodiversity and mitigating climate change impacts.
- Promotion of Clean Energy: Advocating for and facilitating the adoption of clean, renewable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability.
- Educational and Awareness Campaigns: Public awareness campaigns and community workshops aim to educate students and residents about climate change, its impacts, and sustainable practices, while also teaching ways to enhance climate resilience and reduce environmental footprints.
GENDER EQUALITY
- Empowering Communities and Preventing GBV: The Meraki Action Initiative promotes gender equality by training stakeholders and leading community dialogues on harmful practices that lead to gender-based violence (GBV). We enhance support systems with effective referral pathways and work to eliminate the underlying factors sustaining GBV.
- Supporting Community Leaders in Advocating for Girls’ Rights: MAI supports community leaders in challenging harmful gender practices and ensures that referral pathways are accessible and effective. Our programs tackle child marriage and teenage pregnancy, emphasize the importance of education, and focus on community rebuilding to advance gender equality.
- Reducing School Dropouts and Mentoring Boys: We offer gender orientation sessions for stakeholders, parents, teachers, and community leaders to address rising school dropout rates among girls and promote gender equality in education. Our mentorship programs for boys aim to prevent SGBV by addressing risky behaviors such as alcoholism and drug abuse, fostering a culture of respect and dignity.
