Equity in services and opportunities.

WELCOME TO MERAKI ACTION INITIATIVE

Meraki Action Initiative (MAI) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving lives and promoting sustainable development through comprehensive programs in health and education. Established in 2024, we are committed to fostering sustainable development by advancing quality education, ensuring accessible healthcare, and empowering communities. We strive to create lasting change by addressing key challenges, promoting equity, and building resilience. MAI aims to transform lives and rural communities through integrated approaches, scaling our interventions to achieve sustainable impact to ensure a brighter, more equitable future for everyone. Together, we leave a positive impact on the lives we touch.

OUR FOCUS AREAS

We primarily focus on health and education as our main thematic areas, while also addressing cross-cutting issues such as climate justice and gender equality.

HEALTH

We implement programs to promote healthy living and improve access to healthcare, including health education workshops, awareness campaigns, community outreach events, provision of essential health services, and training for healthcare workers.

EDUCATION

We implement programs to help boys and girls stay in school and complete their education, including mentorship, vocational and life skills training, career guidance, reading clubs, and debating clubs.

CLIMATE ACTION

We facilitate tree planting at household and school levels, with 30% of trees being fruit-bearing, to build a climate-resilient community and empower children to participate in climate action.

GENDER EQUALITY

Promoting equality and tackling challenges faced by both boys and girls. This involves focusing on the boy child to prevent social deviance like drug and alcohol abuse, while supporting the retention of girls in school.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Susan's Story: Transformation Through Reading Clubs

I am a Primary 6 student at Abim Primary School. I used to struggle in school and even thought about dropping out because I did not believe I could succeed. My mother wanted me to stay home and join a tailoring school, but everything changed when I joined the reading club in my community. Through reading sessions, games, and interacting with friends, I gained confidence, improved my study habits, and started performing better in school. The reading club became a safe space for me and helped me balance school and family responsibilities. Now, I am determined to finish primary school, join secondary school, and achieve my dream of becoming a nurse.

Inspiring Alumni Visit

Dr. Okello James, a gynecologist and former student of Abim Primary School, returned to the school after 40 years and inspired learners with his success story despite growing up in difficult conditions. His visit gave pupils hope and showed them that education and perseverance can help them achieve their dreams.

The alumni visit motivated students to stay committed to their studies and believe in their potential. By sharing his personal journey, Dr. Okello encouraged learners to work hard, reduce absenteeism, and focus on building a better future through education.
